THE BENEFITS OF A NON-MEAT DIET

The following is taken from the Book of Rosicruciæ by Dr. R.S. Clymer.

There are two reasons why Neophytes well on the Path toward the achievement of spiritual (Soul) Consciousness should abstain from warm-blooded animal foods.

One of these reasons is spiritual, the other is material. Everyone on the Path should be familiar with both that he may properly govern his attitude and practice in the selection of proper and harmonious foods.

The spiritual reason for abstaining from the meat of warm-blooded animals may appear as a "dark mystery" to the profane, but we are not dealing with these. The present information is only for those seeking the Light and making an effort to become one with the Light. All Neophytes who have read Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress are familiar with his animal symbols representing the carnal passions of man which must be subdued or transmuted to permit the Neophyte to advance spiritually.

There is also the representation or symbolization of the Godly emotions by other animals, as for instance, the dove as peace.

The more advanced students recognize that while these passions and emotions are symbolized as animals, it is equally true that each and every one of the passions and emotions are likewise made manifest to the Neophyte by means of colors in the Light; the "gross" colors representing the carnal passions, the finer colors the Godly emotions.

In the process of Arcane practice and development, the colors, with few exceptions, symbolize carnal passions or Godly emotions, both of which are a part of the Neophyte, and either or both may manifest at different times, because the carnal passions have not yet been purified, while Godly emotions may still be quite weak. It is by the manifestation of color that the Master in part guides the Neophyte from "mortality to Immortality."

It is to be especially noted that the aura, as the result of ureas and toxins in warm-blooded animals, is identical with the aura of the gross or carnal passions not yet refined or transmuted in the Neophyte. When the Neophyte partakes of such warm-blooded meats and reports certain colors it would be impossible for the Master to say whether these colors in the Light are the result of his yet unregenerated inner self, or the auras of the flesh he has eaten.

His progress is judged by these colors, the Master assuming that they represent one or more of the gross passions, when in fact these may no longer be present. With this explanation the difficulty of guiding the meat-eating Neophyte correctly will at once be recognized. It is for this reason especially that Neophytes are instructed not to eat warm-blooded meats during a certain period of Arcane training.

This is during the period when the development of the inner spiritual Light must finally result in (a) bringing the Divine Spark into Consciousness; (b) developing the inner center of Light, the Holy of Holies bringing about Illumination and God, or Cosmic Consciousness; the purpose of the Great Work. Is it impossible to continue the eating of warm-blooded meats and also attain to Soul Consciousness?

A frank question demands an equally candid answer.

It is no doubt possible that by continued effort this barrier may be overcome, but the work will be much more difficult and greatly prolonged. Much of the work mist be dome again and again, because the Master or teacher is being misled by the auras which cannot be separated. The real cause for the unfavorable colors can only be discovered by continued experience, examination and reexamination.

It is also admitted, truth being our aim, that there are instances where the seeker is sincere, but due to physical conditions, faulty digestion present in certain serious ailments, he may require warm-blooded meats as protein. These, by long effort and special guidance, can attain to Illumination and Soul Consciousness.

The difficulties in both instances led the early Master Initiates to instruct their Neophytes to discontinue eating warm-blooded meats during the period commencing with the Light- Arcanum practices, and continuing until final Consciousness is attained. When this is done, the Initiate seldom returns to the warm-blooded meat diet unless there is a special reason for it.
This, in brief, is the spiritual aspect relating to the eating of warm-blooded meats.

And here is the second, or material problem.

Up to within a comparatively few years ago both the laity and the medical profession, with the exception of a numerically few, labored under the impression that in order to be healthy and that man's body might function normally, it was necessary for him to consume a large amount of warm-blooded animal food, such as lamb or mutton, beef and pork.

This belief existed despite the universally known fact that there are an almost countless millions of people who, because of religious reasons do not eat animal food of any kind, not even milk, milk products or eggs, yet remain healthy and normal.

The first world war with its need for meats, due to their ease of preparation and high protein value, and the consequent scarcity for the folks at home, made it necessary that the officials in charge of the public welfare, and with the help of physicians, find desirable substitutes for meats and reasonable explanations why the health of the people could be maintained by the use of such substitutes.

In the beginning of this reeducation of the people many statements given out were little more than flimsy excuses to satisfy and quiet the public mind. As professional investigations proceeded, it was found that many of the substitutes recommended were actually of greater benefit to health and well-being than the meats, because these substitutes were free from the toxins, urates, and as in the case of pork, the deadly Trichnae, with which much of pork is infested and which, unless destroyed by a long period of extreme heat in the cooking process, will continue to live and infect human beings.

Soon after the ending of the world war, the plentiful supply of meat products, and because of its ease in preparation, the lessons learned were forgotten and the people almost as a whole returned to their "fleshpots" as of yore.

Then came world war two and the far greater need for meat and meat products for the army in the field than in the first world war. This again brought the return of meat substitutes. An army of investigators became active. They began where they had left off after world war one. They found and made known to the public many substitutes for meat which would maintain health at as high a level, if not even higher, than does meat.

As a matter of fact, Anemia and various kidney ailments, supposed to be due to a lack of meat in the diet, gradually reduced noticeably, and it was clearly and scientifically proven by actual tests, not merely in the laboratory, that warm-blooded meats were not essential to the diet, but that many would be healthier without them.

The world war is again ended. The public as a whole is forgetting the lessons learned and is once more returning to a heavy meat diet, so much so that various ailments basically caused by the toxins. ureas and diseases in meat are again increasing. In addition to this, there are many physicians who tell their patients suffering from such ailments as Anemia, that they must eat a considerable amount of meat in order to raise the red blood count. They recommend meat eating despite the fact that America today is the greatest meat consuming nation on earth, and THAT IN AMERICA THERE ARE MORE SUFFERERS, ALL HEAVY MEAT EATERS, FROM ANEMIA, THAN IN ANY OTHER COUNTRY ON EARTH. Moreover, these sufferers are told that the heavy consumption of liver is of prime importance if they seek to regain health.

What is the answer to this problem from the standpoint of the physician? Instead of feeding patients crude liver which may not even be digested due to digestive disturbances, liver concentrates might be substituted. Such concentrates are purified from toxins and ureas and do not have the same effect on mind and body, or even the spiritual self, as does meat. It is the answer to the problem where warm-blooded animal food is indicated, and especially is this true because these concentrates can be metabolized even where digestion is below par.

Protein is a prime necessity to a proper diet. Mental workers require a much greater amount of protein than physical workers. It must however be remembered that protein is found in many articles of diet; for instance:in every grain and legume in which the seed germ remains. In addition to protein, Lecithin, is an absolutely necessary element for brain and nerves. Many believe that this is found only in animal sweetbreads, brains, yolk if eggs, fish eggs, oysters and calms.

To avoid contradictions, it is admitted that meat and meat products are more easily prepared and more readily digested than foods taken from the sea. This however is off-set by the fact that meats contain, as already stated, toxins ureas and disease germs, moreover they are greatly lacking in the most vital elements such as Lecithin, iron, calcium and Iodine, all in a highly organic form.

Under normal conditions, milk cottage cheese and every milk product is sufficiently rich to supply every need of calcium, phosphorus and the nerve builder casein. Eggs are rich in many minerals not found in meat. They are especially rich in the sulphur needed by nerves and brain, and in Lecithin. The grains and legumes are all rich in many elements: a life giving vital element being in the seed, itself a life- protein; Lecithin - the life in the life germ, not to mention many of the most important vitamins. This is especially true of Soy beans and Alfalfa, from which many of the organic vitamins and minerals now so universally sold, are extracted.

The Oyster is rich in iron, Lecithin and Iodine; the clam in digestive acids and vital elements; shrimp is richest of all foods in organic Iodine. All fish eggs are high in protein, in vital elements; each egg being a life-germ in itself, and in Lecithin. All fish are richer in vital protein than is meat, with the possible exception of rare or raw beef.

In many instances an extra heavy protein diet is required. It is far easier to arrange this diet with the non-warm blooded proteins than with warm-blooded meats. The more warm-blooded meats man consumes the greater is the amount of toxins, ureas and poisons which he takes into the system and which, in their elimination, overtax the kidneys and are the cause of many forms of urinary diseases.

The extra heavy protein diet may be easily and readily arranged in this manner:

As a base of such a diet, we employ milk, and if at all possible, unpasteurized milk. This we know to be rich in casein - a protein - and the necessary calcium. As a second protein we can use either oysters, clams, shrimp, tuna fish, salmon, crab meat or lobster meat.

In the preparation of clams and oysters for a double protein food, the raw clams or oysters (do not use canned) are brought to a boil in one vessel, the brought just to a boil in another, then mixed. In this manner the acid in the clams and oysters is first neutralized, while the casein in the milk is coagulated.

In making a double protein dish by using shrimp, crab or lobster meat, tuna fish or salmon, it is desirable to use the canned products, because in these the acids are already neutralized in the process of canning. Bring the milk to a boil, then add the shredded shrimp, crab, lobster, tuna or salmon, and by seasoning to taste, the dish is ready to serve; a dish RICHER BY FAR IN EVERY ELEMENT: PROTEIN, CASEIN, MINERAL ELEMENTS and VITAL ELEMENTS, THAN IS THE BEST MEAT EVER SERVED.

Double protein dishes are naturally acid creating in their reactions. They should be well combined with several raw or cooked vegetables, including a starch in the form of bread, rice, barley or baked potatoes. Such a meal is perfection.

Where a vital protein is desired, raw oysters and clams offer the BEST supply. They are far superior to any meat. Crabs and lobsters in any form are always excellent. It is well to keep in mind that all of these must be properly combined with vegetables and one starch.

Next in importance to the double protein dishes are raw oysters and clams, and the almost countless other sea foods (fish), every one of which is richer in vital food elements than the meats, unless meat is eaten raw or nearly so.

There are several other forms in which these double protein dishes may be served to advantage, because they meet all the demands of a high protein diet for workers under nerve and mental strain, or those who are in such a physical condition that they require a high protein diet.

(A) To the combination of milk and either oysters, clams, shrimp, crab, lobster, salmon, tuna or other sea food, add either potatoes, barley or rice, and any vegetable, or combination of vegetables desired, and serve this with a salad of fresh vegetables and a dressing composed in very small part of pure apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is stressed because the acetic acid counteracts any possible putrefaction resulting from an incomplete digestion of proteins. The variety of such combinations is almost endless and they serve all purposes and occasions.

(B) Use either shrimp, crab or lobster meat, salmon, tuna or fish eggs, in combination with vegetables for a salad, and serve with potatoes and lemonade. These are ideal and perfect foods during warm weather.

No dessert should follow any of these combinations. This is strictly prohibited if health and well-being is desired.

Those who really wish to live on a non warm-blooded meat diet, one free from the toxins, ureas and poisons, have an almost unlimited variety to choose from, each of which gives the organs of elimination far less work than a meat diet. These vital foods, like meats, are acid forming, the dried legumes more so, and these acids must be neutralized by vegetables, especially the raw vegetables; vegetable juices, fruits and fruit juices. Vegetable juices should be given preference, except in sub-acid conditions.

These instructions are prepared especially for those of the Path of Life who take their efforts seriously, and who at the same time seek a high degree of health and vitality. The profane would also profit greatly by following such a regime.

It is all too well known that one of the causes which militates against the successful propaganda of Christianity in the East is flesh-eating, which is so repulsive to Brahmins, Buddhists, and others, as indulged in by the Christians. There is all manner of evidence that the early Christians, especially the Gnostics, did not indulge in meat-eating. All the writings of Basil, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria, Jerome, Origen, Marcian, Callistratus and others bear witness to this fact.

In his research of many years, Beard found that nearly all of the great religious revivals in the past had been inaugurated by men who had been abstainers from flesh. The list included St. Francis, of Assisi; Wesley, and Swedenborg. General William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army and the members of his family, Bramwell Booth, chief of staff of the Salvation Army wrote a tract on the subject, which was widely circulated by the Salvation Army. Later among those who endorsed the non-flesh diet were Pope, Archdeacon Wilberforde, Rev. R. J. Campbell, M.A., Rev. the Hon. Edward Lyttleton, Head Master of Eton, and C.Arthur Pearson.*
