IN SEARCH OF LOVE AND WISDOM

Chapter Four

A Heaven on Earth

Can there, indeed, be a Heaven on Earth? The recorded history of mankind spans a period of several thousand years and one would be hard pushed to say that man in general is a better being today than he was in the beginning of his sojourn on this planet.

Surely, a realistic look at the modern world must give all concern as to whether mankind is moving toward the proverbial Heaven or in the opposite direction. Fortunately the outer appearance of things is not necessarily the truth of the matter. Although evil, dishonor, violence, and sexual degeneracy are rife throughout humanity, there is also an ever growing group of individuals who are devoted to bringing to fruition this Heaven on Earth.

One of the Natural Laws of the Universe is Balance. Under the functioning of this Law, action and reaction to all that occurs are provided by the Order of Things. Evil (unlawfulness) in any form not only brings about its own destruction but also creates a stimulus for good action. There would be no such thing as nobility unless there were those who acted ignobly. Kindness would go unappreciated were there no unkindness. Even the striving for spirituality would not be possible if there were not the desires of the carnal body that attempt to lead us from what we know is right.

All things considered, there are undoubtedly more good individuals in the world now than have ever been at one time in all history. Unfortunately, there are also more evil persons. But that is the nature of things at this time.

To bring to fruition the desired Heaven on Earth, two things must take place. First, the good forces of the Earth must learn to work together in such a way that they are an example to all others and thereby lead them into more productive paths of life. Second, those who will not be educated will be removed by the reaction of their evil acts. Through the implementation of these events, man will have the assurance that the Heaven on Earth is not only feasible but eminently practical.

The Individual's Role

Within the heart of every good person the desire pulses to help in the efforts to bring about this Heaven on earth. But the plea of many is, "What can I do specifically to help?" Some say, The evil in the world now is so intense and so seemingly all pervasive that I am at a loss to know what I can do to help."

Each worthy individual in the world has a mission at this time (see the text, The Circle of Lives, available through this publisher), some more in the limelight than others. This purpose can be determined only by the inner desires of the person himself. However, there is one thing we all can do, the power of which is frequently misunderstood and unappreciated by most of humanity. We can generate the power created and dispersed by the vibrations of love, peace, and goodness each moment of each day.

Whenever this force is mentioned, two questions are always asked. "How can we generate such feelings in a world in which men act so abominably towards one another?" And, "How can such thoughts really help others; aren't people affected only by what they think and do?"

These valid questions show that the questioner is interested in being of service even though he is not overly conversant with all the Laws which apply. Many years ago, the Nazarene taught, "Love thine enemies." He knew that this is not easy, but He also knew that as we are able to do this we place around ourselves an invisible protective shield which prevents the evils of the world from penetrating. This shield of love is more now so much more prevalent and powerful.

If it were not possible to erect this shield, the Nazarene would not have given this admonition. He knew it is not easy to do, but he knew that it can be accomplished if there is sufficient desire on the part of the individual.

The first step toward this objective concerns the mind set of the thought-sender. Once we truly accept the mechanism involved here, it becomes much easier to direct our thoughts accordingly. In keeping with the nature of all vibrations, our own thoughts become a gate or a filter which allows only thoughts of a similar type to pass and excludes all that do not fit the pattern. If we hold only thoughts of love and peace, these are the only vibrations (thoughts) of others that will be permitted to pass trough our filter.

To the contrary, if we fill our mind with thoughts of resentment, distrust, hate, or other adverse emotions, these are the ones that pass our filter and those of love, compassion, peace, and a kindly nature are effectively blocked. Once we accept this premise, it is evident that we should make our own filter as selective of good as possible.

But this does not answer the second question. In fact, it seems to verify its concern. Could you not also ask, "How can my good thoughts help reduce the evil in the world if all the evil persons have their gates closed to my worthy vibrations?"

The answer to this was given in Scripture by the Nazarene. He said that the Lord "maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust." Why? Because He loves all His creation and wants to give each the same opportunity to advance and improve. God does not judge, nor should we. He sends out His love without reservations. So should we. He knows that only a few will accept what He has to give, but He wants it always to be present should someone desire to use it. So should it be with us. By sending out thoughts of love and compassion constantly to all mankind we not only protect and exalt ourselves, but we also bathe all humanity in a milieu of these emotions that will pass through the filters of some who drop their guard for a moment and allow good to come in.

An earthly example of this type of activity can be found in the process known as photosynthesis. All animal life, including human beings, on this planet is entirely dependent on the minute amount of good sent out each moment by every plant which grows. Yes, this even includes weeds. Through the process of photosynthesis plants take in our toxic waste, carbon dioxide, and transmute it into oxygen, which they then discharge into the ether for us to breathe. Without this life-sustaining gas, we could not live.

As mentioned previously, the amount of oxygen given off by each plant is minuscule, but the accumulation of the various plants makes life feasible for the great variety of animal life with which our world abounds. So is it with each person's thoughts of love and peace to all. The thoughts are like the oxygen of the plant, of little seeming help by themselves, but, when put together with many of like mind, capable of supporting a Heaven on Earth.

Overcoming Evil with Good

We, as oxygen-breathing animals, take in this gas as it is discharged by the plants and, by our metabolism, change it into carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide is then taken up by the plants for their use and once again converted into oxygen. And do the circle of life goes around and around. This mutual arrangement is known as symbiosis.

According to the ancient Egyptian Law of Hermes, "As above, so below; as in the inner, so in the outer, as in the lesser, so in the greater," we can surmise that symbiosis may function in the spiritual world as we.. As in the material. And it does. Each of us, like the plant, has the ability of transmutation. We can take in the waste products of adverse thoughts and emotions and, by the process of transmutation, change them into all that is good, beautiful, noble, and uplifting. By doing so we emulate the plant in its transmutation of carbon dioxide into oxygen.

There is one important difference between our acts of transmutation and those of the plant, however. The plant is programmed by Nature to do this. It garners no approbation for its efforts. If it is to survive, it can do nothing else. Not so with us. We must make conscious effort to produce these transformations and therefore our efforts to do so accrue to our credit. All vegetation must follow the Laws of Universal Order, we have a choice. The most a plant can expect from its forced obedience is the opportunity to change to a slightly higher form in its next materialization. We, on the other hand, through our conscious efforts at transmutation, have the ability to become an immortal being.

Our individual efforts to send good into the world may seem insignificant, but they are essential to produce the promised Heaven on Earth in the same fashion that the oxygen sent out by the plants is essential for material life as we know it.

Were it not for the vibrations of good we send out, this poor old world would quickly die from the reaction of unopposed evil. The saying, "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing," takes on new meaning with this thought in mind. We can readily see that it is not necessary for these good men to physically restrain all evil to prevent its growth ("Vengeance is mine...saith the Lord"), but it is vital that good men send out healthy vibrations to offset the destructive forces of the adverse reactions of evil.

Evil, by its inherent nature, is self-destructive. Good will always survive evil. But, unless good is disseminated, both in thought and deed, evil will destroy all life.

Evil, as such, can never triumph, because it has the seeds of its own destruction within it. Unless the world has some good in it to build solid foundations, its civilizations could indeed perish.

Even at a time of rampant evils, such as now, there are many good people in the world. This is not enough, however; not only must we be inherently good, but we must exhibit that good. If the plants transmuted carbon dioxide into oxygen but did not them disperse the oxygen into the atmosphere, all animal life would perish. In the same manner unless we send thoughts of love, compassion, nobility, and peace into the ether daily, evil can destroy all human life along with itself.

A Model for a Life of Goodness

Therefore, take heart. Your efforts to increase the good in the world are never without effect. Each constrictive thought and action increases the chance that someone will be affected by your efforts and will have their own life changed. By your example you have the opportunity to provide to all who know you a model of the difference between a life of goodness and the good life.

When one has found the way to keep the mind filled with constructive thoughts, he has found the fountain of youth. Such thoughts consistently held transmit not only to the outer world but to the inner world as well. As they traverse the material body they assist in burning our disease and infirmity. Thus we see that goodness has no limits. It builds benefit upon benefit. Know that when you exude thoughts of peace and good will, you are sending out essential food to starving souls everywhere.
