A Thing of Beauty

The poet has said, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever." This thought is one of the important secrets of happiness on the temporal plane. While the beauties of God's Creation are without peer, they are often short-lived. The butterfly has a very short life span, the songs of the birds are only a certain season, the flower blooms but is soon wilted, the glories of Spring and Fall soon geve way to the more subdued seasons of Summer and Winter. However, man through the art of his mind and hands has the ability to fix in time the glories of Nature's beauty. Just as the poet was contemplating the beauties of a Greek vase made centuries before when he penned the immortal words above, so are we able to view, read and listen to beauties created by men in their efforts to perpetuate the transient beauties of Nature.

These efforts are some of the noblest in which man (and women) can engage, as long as they truly create beauty - beauty that is a joy forever. This type of beauty is not of the mind, but of the Soul. If the creations of man touch not the Soul of his fellowman, they are but transitory and will be forgotten in the next age. True art of any kind is that which speaks from the Soul of one to the Soul of others, the art itself merely being the vehicle by which this transfer is made. By his art, a creator of beauty tells us more about his personal development than all the biographies that could be written. The biography is a view from outward in, the art is a view from inward out.
